In a teacher’s workday, it is very common to correct the students’ posture so that they enjoy a better quality of life. This article is dedicated to that famous phrase used by many teachers: "sit properly" and is aimed at students who need to understand the importance of a correct posture.

What is postural hygiene?

Postural hygiene is a collection of tips, rules and postural attitudes both static and dynamic aimed at correcting and keeping proper alignment of the back and overall body. Postural hygiene allows us to avoid future problems or injuries, as well as promote a correct physiological and ergonomic growth.

Believe it or not, our students are sitting in school an approximate total number of 27 hours weekly, 108 hours every month and 972 hours per academic year.

This means that every child should be aware of the importance of sitting correctly year by year, month by month, day by day, hour by hour and minute by minute. Many of our students do not sit using the correct posture, misusing the musculature and bone structure of the body.

If we sit incorrectly, put our schoolbags on our back incorrectly, walk with slumped shoulders or sit incorrectly in front of the computer, we are creating a poor relationship between the different parts of the body, which leads to increased stress and fatigue levels in supporting structures.

This misuse can lead to postural problems during the students’ growth, spinal deviations, future herniated discs, headaches, neck pain, back pain, pinched back contractures, scoliosis and so on.

The goal of postural hygiene is to learn some easy and basic tips that will protect our students’ backs, and to avoid pain crises and other problems ensuring a better quality of life and promoting a proper postural growth.

We will now enclose a card with basic tips on the correct healthy posture when sitting, walking, reaching the bag and sitting in front of the computer. I really hope these tips will help our pupils at Agora Portals.

Postural hygiene is essential to keep your back healthy.

We need to sit and walk with our back straight. If you do not keep a good posture, your back may suffer and that will result in serious problems when older.

Valeria Muntz, currently in 1st Year of Secondary Education, in relation to this article, suggests the following tips.

“We need to take care at school, for example, by carrying our backpacks correctly, using both straps, one on each shoulder, and by sitting properly at our desks, and walking with our back straight. By doing this, you will improve your postural hygiene in the present and the future. I do not want any problem with my back, because it is not healthy. So I recommend these guidelines which are very simple but at the same time very beneficial”.
