Fun cooking: “Let´s Learn the Parts of the Face through Cooking!¨
Like every year, we pre-school teachers have been given the opportunity to carry out authentic workshops with our students, hands-on experiences of surprising originality. In this first trimester the unit about the human body will give us the chance to convert our young pupils into fun, expert …chefs! With their great culinary abilities and dressed up appropriately for the occasion thanks to the colorful, practical aprons they brought, we will get to work. This workshop has three different versions although the basic theme for all three of them is the same: make a face with food!
In the first version, they will make a sweet little bear´s face. The ingredients our little cooks will use are: a glass, sandwich bread slices, Lacasitos chocolate candies and honey. The children will begin by using the brim of the glass to make a circle in a slice of bread (at home they could toast the bread first with mummy and daddy´s help). This circle will be the bear´s head. They will use two corners of the same bread slice to get triangles for the ears. Next the children will choose the colors they want of Lacasitos for the eyes and nose. To complete the bear´s face, they will add the finishing touch: the sweetest possible smile made with a trickle of honey! When the little bear´s face is done, all they need to do is take a big bite!
The second alternative is to create a little person´s face, but this time the ingredients will be a round cookie, Lacasitos and chocolate syrup. First the students will cover the cookie by spreading chocolate syrup on it with their finger. The syrup will help stick the Lacasitos on for the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. To finish it off, the children will drizzle more chocolate syrup on the head to create their favorite hairstyle: punky, curly, short or long hair. An incredible number of outcomes are possible…and all of them edible!
The third option that isn´t sweet at all, but just as fun will be to invent a clown´s face using a slice of bologna (“mortadela”),corn, olives, ketchup, small round crackers and corn curls (“gusanitos”). First, our little chefs will put two olives on the bologna for the eyes, and a circle of ketchup for the clown´s nose. Next they will place kernels of corn in a row for the teeth. Then they will use two crackers for the ears. The final fun touch will be using the corn curls to make the clown´s curly blond hair! What a yummy original snack!
We are sure that our students will have lots of fun doing this activity. That´s why we urge you to use these ingenious ideas with your children at home. When their culinary masterpieces are finished, set the table and enjoy your snack!
