Cabrera Interpretation Centre

Angel Gil (5th grade) / Actual Edu

The Cabrera archipelago, located off the southern coast of Mallorca, belongs to the municipality of Palma de Mallorca. The military presence since 1916 prevented the area from getting a tourist invasion, which has allowed the conservation of this exceptional ecosystem. Since April 29, 1991 it has been part of Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Cabrera Archipelago by Law 14/1991.

On Monday November 14 students from 5th grade went to an aquarium on Cabrera in Colonia de Sant Jordi.

Since July 2008 the coastal town of Colonia de Sant Jordi, in the municipality of Ses Salines, houses the Interpretation Centre of the National Maritime-Terrestrial Park of Cabrera. Located in a new building in the form of circular talayot, it shows the main aspects related to the natural environment of the archipelago. Videos and interactive displays allow visitors to learn about its geology, flora and fauna and different aquaria attempt to simulate a dive in the water showing the great diversity of its marine environment.

Although the sub-archipelago Cabrera administratively belongs to the city of Palma, its proximity to the Colonia de Sant Jordi explains why this is where the park interpretation centre is located. Boats to the park come from the south of Mallorca (Portopetro and Colonia de Sant Jordi). Here visitors can see first hand the natural wealth that deserves the maximum protection. Due to the fragility of the park environment and in order not to disturb the tranquility of the different species that live there, you can only visit a limited area near the port of Cabrera.

So this center is an excellent opportunity to better understand environmental values. Aquaria display the different species which can be found in the surrounding waters and another section shows its terrestrial environment. The contents are part of the Mediterranean history and culture, and can be seen in the premises whose main building is inspired by the talayotic megalithic construction on the islands of Mallorca and Menorca.

Admission is free and visiting hours are from 10:00 to 14:30 and from 15:30 to 18:00 Visitors can choose between a guided tour or a self-guided tour.

What is La Cabrera?

The Cabrera archipelago, located off the southern coast of Mallorca, belongs to the municipality of Palma de Mallorca. Since April 29, 1991 it has been part of Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Cabrera Archipelago by Law 14/1991.

In the museum we got to know all kinds of wildlife: flying fish, groupers, lobsters... also had information on whales, dolphins, ... Then we watched a video on how the Balearic archipelago was formed and at the end of the visit, we climbed into the attic and saw Cabrera super close. It was awesome! Then we walked a bit on the beach and the park and practised recycling.

It was a unique experience not only because we had a wonderful time, but super interesting because we learned so many things!
